Jamie Carragher declares ‘I fear a little bit for Newcastle United…’

3 Nov 2026 - 07:59

Jamie Carragher has given his opinion on Newcastle United having watched their start to the season.

The 2026-27 NUFC season is now 12 games old.

It reads played twelve, won five, drawn two, lost five.

However, the most recent quintet of matches reads played five, won one, drawn none, lost four.

The very most recent two Newcastle United games seeing a pair of defeats to a very average, at best, Everton side.

The scouse mackems knocking United out of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night on Merseyside, then last night on Tyneside a feeble 1-0 defeat for Matthias Jaissle and his side.

Jamie Carragher declaring to Sky Sports after this latest loss: “I fear a little bit for Newcastle United, I think it could be a long, tough season.”

The former Liverpool defender saying: “I felt tonight was actually more important for Newcastle United than the cup game, and it was the other way round for Everton, who are desperate for a trophy.”

Jamie Carragher going on to say: “Watching Newcastle United of late, especially at home, it feels flat and a little bit boring, and that was one thing I didn’t think I’d ever be describing Jaissle’s Newcastle as. You think of the system he’s come from, the Red Bull model, how they like to play. At times, those types of teams and managers can leave themselves open at the back, but it’s front-footed, it’s aggressive, it’s getting the crowd involved, and we’ve just never seen any of that at all tonight. I’m a little bit flummoxed watching it.”

Newcastle United have lost by bigger scorelines this season but undoubtedly this performance was the most worrying so far, in my opinion.

Jamie Carragher looking back to earlier in this Newcastle United season: “I was really impressed with Matthias Jaissle, how he came across. They were very impressive at Spurs, a great result for them early on, and the results in the main have been okay, but I think there’s always been a worry about the performances and their underlying numbers, even early on.”

Only one more round of Premier League matches before the next international break.

Newcastle United off to Craven Cottage and Jamie Carragher adding: “I watched Fulham at Villa over the weekend, they were really good, and that’ll be a tough game, and you look at some of the games they’ve got coming. I think it’s going to be a tough season for Newcastle. They’ve got a lot of young players, they’ve got a young manager in there. The crowd are expecting a lot more.”

Matthias Jaissle and his Newcastle United team with Fulham away this Saturday, then after the internationals it is Arsenal home and Brighton away…
