‘It’s not easy to explain as it looked so good during the week…’ Matthias Jaissle after Everton defeat

2 Nov 2026 - 23:05

Matthias Jaissle watched on as his team lost to Everton, again.

A 1-0 home defeat.

This Premier League loss to the Toffees coming only four days after Everton also knocked Newcastle United out of the Carabao Cup.

The goal shortly after half-time and a combination of a comedy of errors when it came to Newcastle United’s defending and what looked dubious decision making from the referee.

Newcastle United then lacking the quality and penetration to get much joy out of a solid Everton defence.

Matthias Jaissle speaking to BBC Sport: “Today we didn’t play well. It’s not enough against Everton to get a good result, that’s something we need to do better. The performance today, you didn’t see our playing style and that can’t happen.”

The Newcastle United boss going on to say: “It’s not easy to explain as it looked so good during the week [in training]. The lads looked committed and the confidence was there. Today from the start the confidence was missing. We need to improve really fast. We have to encourage them that they are able to do it, that they have the potential to play in that way.”

Matthias Jaissle on creating chances and the killer goal: “We should have created even more moments. It was not good enough. To concede a goal like that also was not good enough. It’s almost like a negative spiral [on the elements of the goal]. I’m not happy with the referee decision. For me it’s a clear foul on Fabian Schar. It’s a difficult period. We also know you can only overcome that as a unit.”
