Boos from Newcastle United fans and Matthias Jaissle asked for his reaction to it

3 Nov 2026 - 07:32

Newcastle United fans watched on as their team lost 1-0 to Everton at St James’ Park.

A combination of shocking decision making by the referee and woeful defending gifted the visitors the lead.

However, this wasn’t out of keeping with what Newcastle United fans had watched in the previous 48 minutes.

A laboured United team huffed and puffed and managed to make Everton almost look like a decent team.

The 49th minute saw the killer blow but the half-time whistle had already seen the Newcastle United fans deliver their own appraisal of what they were witnessing.

When that half-time whistle went, it was met by a chorus of boos from a minority of the St James’ Park crowd.

By the time the full-time whistle went, the volume was significantly higher, as the booing rained down from those who still remained inside the stadium.

Matthias Jaissle asked about the booing from the Newcastle United fans: “After a performance like that I can understand. That is the reality and I am responsible for that. We need to work on the things we need to improve and after today…that is a lot.”

The United boss going on to say: “Unfortunately we couldn’t deliver over the whole 90 minutes, it was not our game and our style of playing. That is something we are very frustrated and disappointed about. If you cannot deliver when it counts then you don’t deserve to win. We were not brave enough in possession, too many long balls.”

The frustration for Newcastle United fans was only made worse by the nature of the only goal of the match.

Joelinton won the ball fairly in midfield only for Barry to then belatedly throw himself to the ground and con the pathetic referee into giving a foul. Everton then carved United open down our right from that free-kick in a non-threatening position, it was amateurish, then when the low cross came in it saw Lukas Hornicek somehow allow the ball to squirm under him and Barry had an open goal from a few yards out. The goal survived a VAR offside check but there appeared to be a clear foul by Barry on Fabian Schar that should have seen it disallowed for that offence, nothing doing on that front though.

Matthias Jaissle on that goal: “In my eyes it is clearly a foul, so [should be] a disallowed goal. Everything comes together. There’s a foul then we are not awake and they can penetrate our box. Also a referee decision where I think he was wrong.”

Matthias Jaissle on individual mistakes from his players: “There are certain moments with not too much confidence, not only with the young lads but also with the more experienced ones. We can work hard, we worked hard and it looked good, but unfortunately we couldn’t deliver today. We analyse tomorrow in detail and try and make things better against Fulham.”
