‘Against a top side in a tough stadium…’ Hull City Captain reflects on defeat to Newcastle United

21 Sep 2026 - 09:08

Lewie Coyle has been reflecting on Hull City losing to Newcastle United.

A first Premier League defeat of the season for the Tigers.

Hull City had picked up wins against both Manchester United and Coventry, as well as draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea.

On Saturday though it was Newcastle United who deservedly came out on top after dominating for over an hour, though the visitors made it an uncomfortable last quarter of the game as NUFC tired and the nine injuries left Matthias Jaissle with very few options on the bench to bring on.

It was the first time in 12 years that Hull fans had been inside St James’ Park to see their team play United and they saw their players put in a spirited performance despite the defeat and having been dominated for the first 65 minutes.

Hull City Captain Lewie Coyle speaking to The Yorkshire Post: “We got to half-time at 2-0 and we are always in the game, we know we are going to have good chances to score goals. The game was lost, if you like, in them first 20 minutes…when you give top quality players that sort of time and space, then they are going to punish you.”

Lewie Coyle going on to say: “We have got loads of spirit in the dressing room, it is never going to be straightforward and you will lose games of football, especially at this level…but it is how we responded and which I’m really pleased with in the game. That’s something to take on after this international break.”

The Hull City Captain adding: “Doing it in a tough atmosphere, going two down, games can go the other way if you are not doing the right stuff. It is never nice to lose but at the same time I’m proud of the way in which the lads responded. Against a top side in a tough stadium we showed a never surrender, never die attitude. I’m proud of the lads for the way we continued to battle back and nearly got that equaliser. We are in a really nice spot and certainly enjoying the Premier League.”
