‘It’s a bit of a pity for Nick Woltemade, Matthias Jaissle is a fantastic coach…’ Christian Ziege
Christian Ziege has been talking about Nick Woltemade and Matthias Jaissle.
The former Bayern Munich and Germany defender looking ahead to what could be possible at Newcastle United.
Nick Woltemade had an up and down first season with United in the Premier League and the three other competitions.
A lot of the media going way over the top with criticism, as the inexperienced striker still scored 11 goals and got a number of assists across the 2025-26 season.
The German international striker saw Eddie Howe leave in the close season and Matthias Jaissle arrive only 18 days before the 2026-27 season kicked off for NUFC.
Matthias Jaissle left Big Nick on the bench for the 2-2 draw with Liverpool and then the striker played the full match as United won 3-2 against West Brom in the Carabao Cup.
Nick Woltemade then came on with 20 minutes to go and Newcastle United leading 1-0 at Tottenham, within a minute Big Nick had got an assist as Wissa made it 2-0 and ensured the away win in the Premier League.
The decision though was then taken for Nick Woltemade to spend the rest of this season on loan with Juventus, as Matias Fernandez-Pardo was signed.
Christian Ziege declaring to Boyle Sports: “I hope Nick Woltemade returns to play under Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle. It’s a bit of a pity for Nick Woltemade, Matthias Jaissle is a fantastic coach who proved himself in Austria and Germany. Woltemade is another example of a player who had one good season at Stuttgart before moving straight to Newcastle and it looks like it was too soon. Performing consistently for three seasons before a big move is very different from moving after just one. The Premier League is tough for strikers, and things didn’t quite work out for him there.”
No doubt many people reading this will wonder two things.
Will Nick Woltemade ever return to play for Newcastle United instead of being sold?
Whilst if Big Nick did ever play for United again, would Matthias Jaissle still be the NUFC Head Coach by that point?
Christian Ziege: “Now Nick Woltemade is on loan at Juventus and Serie A can be even tougher for strikers. Perhaps he should have stayed to work under Jaissle at Newcastle, but if he returns from loan to work with him later, it could be a different story. Let’s hope that everything is going in the right direction for both Woltemade at Juventus and then maybe later for Newcastle.”
After getting very limited chances early on at Juventus, Nick Woltemade has now started five games in Serie A and the Europa League with Juventus winning four of them and drawing the other. Big Nick scoring three goals and getting one assist so far.
