‘It is something where we need to work on…’ Matthias Jaissle
Matthias Jaissle has been talking ahead of Newcastle United facing Everton on Monday night.
This Premier League game at St James’ Park an 8pm kick-off.
It comes only four days after the two teams met at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the Carabao Cup.
That was a 3-1 victory for the home side as they progressed to the quarter-finals of that competition.
For Newcastle United it was a match where they failed to turn their dominance (28 v 11 on shots, 10 v 4 on corners, 37 v 17 touches of the ball in the opposition penalty area etc etc) into a victory.
Failure to turn territorial superiority and getting into great areas into goals, whilst at the other end it was yet more individual mistakes that helped gift the opposition their goals.
Matthias Jaissle reflecting on those soft goals conceded against Everton, as well as a number of others in previous matches this season: “It is something where we need to work on…not conceding so many goals. We need to just avoid these individual mistakes, especially where the opposition is not that dominant on the pitch. We need to improve for the next match on Monday.”
Only Chelsea, Ipswich, Coventry and Palace have conceded more Premier League goals than the 14 United have leaked.
Matthias Jaissle: “Being mature and more clinical, not giving almost a gift for the opposition to score, it feels the opposition is not giving us these gifts.”
After scoring the crucial opening goal at Palace in his first Premier League start since the opening day of the season, William Osula is now an injury worry once again for the United boss.
Matthias Jaissle: “He twisted his ankle when he took the shot…it is too early to say whether he will be fit for Monday. When it comes to scoring goals we need to be more efficient out of so many occasions…how often we entered the box of Everton, there needs to be more than only one goal.”
