Does this explain why Mike Ashley is refusing to go to Newcastle United games this season?

As we all know, ever increasing numbers of Newcastle fans have been staying away from St James Park due to Mike Ashley.

Not much, if anything, though has been said about the NUFC owner himself boycotting.

Mike Ashley not attending any of the four Newcastle home games so far.

Nor indeed was he at the games at Tottenham, Liverpool and Norwich.

Could the answer lie here…

Mike Ashley in that PR Statement on 26 July 2019 published by The Mail:

“I’m a negative to that football club.

“It’s not a secret.

“I don’t feel sorry for myself.

“It is down to me, not Newcastle.

“I give myself one out of five in some aspects because I made proper mistakes, and football isn’t a very forgiving place.

“I didn’t just shoot myself in the foot; I blew my own leg off.

“People would look at me and think I’d gone temporarily insane. They didn’t know what I was doing.

“Will I be there, first game of the season? Maybe.

“What I don’t want is for it to be negative.

“Why would I go if it causes the fans an issue?

“If I’m not there, maybe they can get behind Steve Bruce and get on with it. That’s probably better.

“I don’t want people to think I’m making it worse.

“I don’t want people to be asking how our players can perform in these conditions.

“I don’t want them booing every two minutes.”

Hmmm, call me Mr Sceptical but I always find it difficult to believe that Mike Ashley does anything for the greater good.

As usual, I would assume that staying away from games is for his own selfish reasons.

I think his ego does get further bruised when he gets stick off the Newcastle fans and that explains much of his vindictive retaliation in terms of his attitude and behaviour towards fans.

However, I’m guessing the main reason for staying away from St James Park is likely to be because he doesn’t want photos appearing all over the media of him sitting inside the stadium with a backdrop of thousands of empty seats.
