Miguel Almiron had been hoping for a bit of respite on Thursday.

Still to score a goal for Newcastle United over eight months after arriving on Tyneside, the attacking player today turned out for Paraguay.

Almiron played the full 90 minutes but two first half goals won the friendly, it ending 2-0 to Japan in Kashima.

It is now 10 months since his last goal of any description, that coming for Atlanta United in an MLS 3-1 win over New York City on 11 November 2018.

Since then, he has played 26 games (Newcastle 14, Atlanta 3 and Paraguay 9) without scoring.

Indeed, the 25 year old is still to score for his country at senior level, making 22 appearances (17 starts and 5 as sub) so far for Paraguay.

Almiron is set to get a quick chance to try again, with Paraguay taking on Jordan on Tuesday.

That match being four days before Miguel Almiron and his Newcastle teammates play at Anfield.
