Tottenham 0 Newcastle 1 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Sunday’s win
Tottenham 0 Newcastle 1 – Sunday 25 August 4.30pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.
Newcastle picking up their first points of the season.
An excellent left foot finish from Joelinton and a very committed rearguard action bringing home the win.
Jamie Swan:
“Well that was completely unexpected.
“I think that to a man the workrate was superb and no one can question that they played as a team.
“It was a tough last 20 minutes to watch and Mike Dean (for once) and VAR conspired not to bump us.
“The back three were absolutely tremendous.
“Nobody wants to see the team fail (regardless of the backdrop) and I’m delighted with three points.
“Let’s see if we can back it up.
“Safe journey home to all Mags.
“Retreat to the garden for more beers.”
Paul Patterson:
“Years gone by I would of been pleased as punch at a result like that.
“Fully deserved as it was and I’m pleased for the fans that went down.
“Sadly, now I just treat good results with casual indifference…”
David Punton:
“Putting all the division, rancour and politics to one side for a moment, that is a cracking victory for Newcastle United.
“And it came against a side that made it to the Champions League final.
“A win in their new stadium, which is a stunning arena for playing football.
“Joelinton paying back some of that price tag today. Onwards we go.
“Fans have to be happy with that, right?
“But it doesn’t mean I like Mr Ashley or his silly decisions all of a sudden.
“As for the embattled manager, that’s huge from his point of view, given most of us know that he’s out of his depth.”
Jamie Smith:
“Didn’t expect that mind.
“Irrespective of how much I want things to change I can’t help but be happy at a result like this.
“Some positive signs from Joelinton and Almiron that suggests we might have the required goals after all, although Almiron needs one too, as soon as possible.
“Off the back of the cricket this has been a cracking afternoon’s sport, possibly a turning point for United but possibly one of our trademark false dawns. Let’s see eh.”
Anthony Stafford:
“Good effort, that’s all we wanted, a bit application and effort.
“Well defended…nearly rafaesque.
“Even square head Mike Dean had a good game.
“Good finish by joelinton.
“Good 3 points – well done gents.”
Nat Seaton:
“Well well well…
“Didn’t see that coming (even though I had a ’stupid’ 12/1 Newcastle to win any score bet!).
“It’s yet another victory I’ve been lucky to witness at Tottenham, a great orange filled winning afternoon in the sun.
“Forget about the fact of how poor Spurs were, the most important thing is that we have got 3 points on the board, well done lads!”
