Alan Shearer loving it as he reacts to Tottenham 0 Newcastle 1 – Massive result and performance
A great day for Alan Shearer and the rest of the Newcastle United fanbase.
The best wins are always the ones that are least expected.
Today certainly numbers amongst those.
Newcastle were dismissed as 12/1 no-hopers by the bookies, fair to say that most Newcastle supporter would have rated our chances even worse than that.
When the gamble of playing Allan Saint-Maximin horribly backfired on 17 minutes, things looked bleak.
The winger only training on Friday after a hamstring problem and looking to pull up with the same issue, worries now as to how long he will be out for.
However, Newcastle dug in and whilst it was the exact opposite of the ‘front foot’ football Steve Bruce has promised, some solid committed and disciplined defending made the difference.
So different to the Norwich game, though obviously when you have something to hold on to, it can make a massive difference.
Atsu did well after replacing ASM and when he picked out Joelinton on the edge of the box, the Brazilian gave Lloris no chance with a left foot strike inside the post.
Alan Shearer picked out the 22 year old and Dummett & Almiron for special praise, although he said as well ‘so many impressive performances.’
Only 20% possession for Newcastle but Spurs were clueless when it came to creating anything. Thanks a lot though to Newcastle’s deep lying and committed defensive line, Joelinton isolated or even coming back to the edge of his own box to help out!
Only two efforts on target and whilst Dubravka did well with everything he did – his handling, coming for high balls…he had no real saves to make.
Longstaff produced a good save from Lloris when he should have squared it to two unmarked players before the goal and Joelinton didn’t connect properly with a late volley that would have settled nerves.
However, it didn’t matter, as Alan Shearer and all other Newcastle fans celebrated a massive three points.
Although worries also for Lascelles who was forced off with injury.
Alan Shearer via Twitter:
“So many impressive performances today Newcastle United.
“Dummett, Joelinton, Almiron all magnificent.
“Set up worked to perfection.”
