Gallowgate Flags confirms ‘Legends’ day goes ahead at Newcastle United – Flags purchased
The people behind Gallowgate Flags have confirmed that the ‘Legends’ day display will go ahead.
Despite the current postponement of the previous flag displays seen in earlier games this season, they are pressing on with the special Legends one.
This will take place at St James Park on Saturday 5 November when Cardiff City are the visitors.
The display is set to start at around 2.45pm and will feature 12 Newcastle United Legends on the flags.
The dozen to be honoured are Kevin Keegan, Peter Beardsley, Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby Robson, Colin Veitch, Bill McCracken, Hughie Gallacher, Stan Seymour, Jackie Milburn, Joe Harvey, Bob Moncur and Malcolm Macdonald.
On Monday afternoon, Gallowgate Flags confirmed via their Twitter account that all 12 of the flags had now been bought at a cost of just under £2,000 of supporters’ donated money.
“We’ve now purchased all 12 Legends Day Flags at a cost of just under £2k. Thanks to everyone who donated. It’s going to be some display.”
Earlier this month, one of the organisers told the Chronicle a bit of background to the idea and what would happen on the day.
“It’s 12 of our club legends on massive flags across the Gallowgate from about quarter to three until kick off.
“We are hoping the club will get involved and invite some of the surviving family members of the players to the ground to show them our display.
“Obviously some of the players are still alive. We doubt Alan Shearer or Kevin Keegan will be there because of their media commitments, but we are hoping Beardsley will be there and with the help of the club we hope the families of Gallacher, Milburn, Veitch etc will be there as well.
“It’s going to be a day to celebrate the players who helped build the club into what it is today. Most fans will know who they all are but some of the younger fans might not, so it’s also about getting those players some recognition.”
