Spare a moment of pity for the long suffering Liverpool fans

The situation is hardly helped by the media sucking up to them so much, but the distortion of reality for most Liverpool fans is beyond a joke most of the time.

As a group, the Liverpool fans do really really believe that they are hard done by.

As I say in the title, the press stoke this all up as well because they go along with the notion that the red half of Merseyside (and Torquay, Tokyo and Tonga) are deserving of pity because they aren’t winning the treble every season.

However, if any Newcastle fan dares to dream of winning a trophy (any trophy!), we are slapped down as ‘deluded’.

The excellent Tomkinstimes Liverpool fan website carried the following lines in an article bemoaning their situation in the aftermath of defeat at St.James’ Park;

‘I feel betrayed and bewildered but I still support Rodgers. He still has credit in the bank, of course he does. But…

This is the hangover after one too many. This is the punishing trip to the gym after gorging on fast food. This is the worrying trip to the doctor’s surgery. This is grim and depressing and bleak and uninspiring. This is also familiar.

What is it about Liverpool? Can we never sustain an upward trajectory? Are we doomed to always take part in this dismal cycle of hope followed by crushing despair?’

Crushing despair?!!!!

I won’t bother listing the silverware the long suffering Liverpool fans have seen their team pick up since Newcastle last won any Cup in 1969, or any domestic silverware in 1955, I would run out of room no doubt and so I will just confine it to what the scousers have seen their players win since the turn of the Millennium.

FA Cup 2001, 2006

League Cup 2001, 2003, 2012

Community Shield 2001, 2006

Champions League 2005

UEFA Cup 2001

UEFA Super Cup 2001, 2005

As well as this lot, LIverpool also got to the Champions League final in 2007!

Yes they are having a bit of a (relatively) tougher time after the highs of last season when they were the best attacking team in the Premier League but Liverpool fans support a club who constantly show ambition and are expanding the stadium and have just spent a fortune on players this summer.

No fans ‘deserve’ to win trophies but we all deserve the chance for our clubs to give it their best shot, Liverpool fans should step into the shoes of your average Newcastle fan for a minute if they want to get a real bit of perspective.
