Newcastle striker moves ahead of his Premier League rivals again

Thirty minutes and another goal at Old Trafford moved Papiss Cisse once again ahead of his Premier League rivals.

That penalty against Manchester United moved the Newcastle striker onto eight goals so far this season.

With only 560 minutes on the pitch so far, that makes it 70 minutes for every goal Papiss Cisse has scored, bettering the average of the likes of Sergio Aguero (every 75 mins) and Frank Lampard (82 mins) who has also been used sparingly.

The following are the leading minutes per goal contenders put together by Sky Sports, based on a minimum of three goals scored (minutes per goal and then number of PL goals scored so far this season in brackets);

70 Papiss Cisse (8)

75 Sergio Aguero (14)

82 Frank Lampard (4)

91 Didier Drogba (3)

92 Olivier Giroud (5)

97 Diego Costa (14)

Alan Pardew keeps trotting out this line of Papiss Cisse not being quite right after his knee injury (and Pardew bringing him back ridiculously early against Hull against advice) and he has once again done it ahead of Everton this afternoon;

“Papiss is still not right, you can see it in the way that he moves and that is something we need to look at.

“I don’t think he needs more surgery on his knee but he is not quite right.”

If Newcastle had any other viable options I can understand it but surely Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez and Moussa Sissoko all need to be on the pitch unless they are knackered.

If Cisse can be brought on as a sub or make the odd start as he did against Burnley and Arsenal then he should be in the starting line-up.

He is disappearing for six weeks to the African Cup of Nations, probably after today’s match, so he has to start against Everton.
