Why Newcastle could be expected to beat Liverpool (and Spurs & Man City)

Nine days ago I wrote about how Newcastle could reasonably be expected to have a real chance of beating Liverpool, as well as Spurs and Manchester City.

I didn’t claim that this would happen, just that United had a much better chance in these matches than you might at first think.

While Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City are constantly referred to (by people inside NUFC!) as teams/clubs that the likes of Newcastle can’t get close to…

I did say that with the right tactics Newcastle could have every chance.

All you had to do was forget about the names of the clubs and look at their form – otherwise known as, how are they playing and how many matches have they won?

This is what I wrote before our match at White Hart Lane;

It might be surprising for you to discover that Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City have all been in relatively dismal form.

Tottenham have won only two of their last nine matches.

Liverpool winning three of their last nine (in 90 minutes – they also beat Middlesbrough in League Cup extra time).

Manchester City victorious in four of last ten.

In fact bizarrely, the bare statistics of Newcastle winning three of their last ten matches (one after extra time!) hardly look out of place.

Newcastle aren’t as good as this time last season but neither are Liverpool, Man City and Tottenham!

You don’t need to be some kind of form expert to see that these three teams aren’t exactly at the top of their games.

Tottenham in particular are surely worth having a right good go at.

If we update those statistics since the events of the last eight days we now get the following;

Tottenham have won three of their eleven matches.

Liverpool winning four of their last eleven (in 90 minutes).

While Manchester City now have four wins in their last twelve.

By contrast Newcastle have now won five of their last twelve competitive matches, bizarrely becoming now the in-form team (compared to this trio of ‘top’ teams) of not just the last three matches, but of the last couple of months overall!

On Wednesday night Newcastle weren’t playing the all conquering Manchester City of last season and today United aren’t up against the exciting Liverpool of last season.

Suarez and Sturridge were the top two Premier League scorers of last season, scoring over half of Liverpool’s goals between them.

Instead today, Newcastle are likely to be up against Balotelli and/or Lambert, who haven’t scored a Premier League goal between them.

Newcastle have no reason to take today for granted but neither is there any reason to fear Liverpool. United need to give it their best shot and throw everything at the visitors, if we do then Alan Pardew could look even more smug tonight than on Wednesday – if that is humanly possible.
