Mark Schwarzer targeted for an emergency Newcastle loan – reports

Yesterday we brought you news that Newcastle United are looking at signing an emergency Newcastle goalkeeper, with both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot out at least until January, and this morning it is claimed that Chelsea’s Mark Schwarzer is the player who Alan Pardew has identified as a short-term fix.

The former Boro keeper is behind both Courtois and Cech at Stamford Bridge and The Sun report that if the Premier League give special dispensation, then the Aussie keeper could be the one on his way to St.James’ Park.

Third choice 21 year old Jak Alnwick stepped up on Saturday and showed great composure as a substitute against Chelsea, but with the schedule ahead, United must surely look to bring in a short-term replacement.

With five further matches in December plus a further three in the first ten days of January, even if United stick with Alnwick as a temporary number one, with 17 year old Freddie Woodman the next option, Newcastle must move to at least bring in a more experienced keeper as back-up.

Premier League loan signings are allowed outside the transfer windows in ‘exceptional circumstances’ and injuries to goalkeepers is top of the list.

One relatively recent example surprisingly involves moneybags Manchester City.

In April 2010, Ex-NUFC legend Shay Given picked up an injury when Man City’s number one, with his back-up Stuart Taylor also injured, City asked for special dispensation to sign a keeper for their remaining three matches.

The Premier League allowed the move and Manchester City loaned Marton Fulop from Sunderland.

Interestingly, Man City had first tried to get Joe Hart back to the club as cover but the Premier League blocked the move as there was no recall agreement in place for Hart who was on loan at Birmingham.

Obviously there are similarities with Newcastle who have loaned Karl Darlow back to Nottingham Forest, with also no recall clause apparently.

With key Premier League matches and both domestic cups potentially at stake, Newcastle will surely push through an emergency loan of a keeper such as Mark Schwarzer, rather than relying on a 21 and a 17 year old with 45 minutes of Newcastle United first team action between them.
