Injury news – Two Newcastle centre backs fighting to be back before Christmas

Disappointing but predictable news this morning, with it being widely reported that both Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylorwill definitely miss the QPR match and are expected to miss the next month through injury.

The Newcastle Captain limped off towards the end of the West Brom match and and has a muscle tear, while Steven Taylor missed that match at the Hawthorns and has problem with his knee.

The emergency recall of Remie Streete from his loan spell at Port Vale put the writing on the wall, but the double bad news is ironic after the pair had started to form what looked the kind of solid partnership that gave such a solid foundation to the 2011/12 season, when United finished fifth in the Premier League.

Our recent poll asking fans for their choice of Newcastle centre backs to face QPR saw all but 4% of supporters wanting a partnership that involved either or both of Coloccini and Taylor.

Now it looks as though it will definitely be Williamson and Dummett, with the left back turned centre back facing possibly his biggest test as he won’t have Coloccini’s assured presence next to him.

Similarly Mike Williamson will have to show better form and confidence than he did in the opening matches of this season, looking a shadow of the player who did well last season.

Not the best couple of days for news when you also take into account the blow to Mehdi Abeid while on international duty.
