Alan Pardew ‘We played well today’

Alan Pardew came out after the match today and bizarrely claimed that Newcastle had played well.

A bit like an actor who assumes they’re winning an award at the Oscars, the Newcastle manager had his speech prepared and was determined he wasn’t going to accept the reality of what happened today.

Despite being outplayed for much of the 90 minutes against a really poor team who had only own two in sixteen league games, Pardew was determined to give his own take on events – as though none of us had actually watched the game.

While Perez had a decent game, to claim that Newcastle had the best player on the pitch was a shallow claim to make as United rarely threatened their goal.

In fact I thought Sissoko was easily United’s best player (as usual) today, but couldn’t really claim he was the best on the pitch.

Alan Pardew;

“We were chasing the game a little bit in terms of over-committing really.

“We’d kind of warned the players, Sunderland were going to score a set-piece or if we over-committed. We got punished for it.”

Played well;

“We played well today, on another day we’d have won that.

“Perez was probably the best player on the pitch but it didn’t fall for us.”

Pride;

“I am proud of the way the team approached the game today.

“We have a lot of teams who come here with Sunderland’s set-up, it’s not the first time or only time we’re going to get that but we have to make sure we don’t expose ourselves.”
