Saturday night saw Shola, at the ripe old age of 31, make his competitive debut for Nigeria. Having represented England at Under 21 level, Ameobi first played for Nigeria in a friendly against Venezuela in 2012.
Shola; “I would love to play for Nigeria under Stephen Keshi because he is a good coach, above all I’m very proud to be a Nigerian and will always grab the opportunity to don the green & white colours of my fatherland.”
We’ll obviously have to wait and see what the next move is but at the minute it appears very likely Shola could be unavailable for over a month, as to what happens with Demba Ba in January then that is similarly up in the air.
On Christmas Day the coach of the Nigerian national side, Stephen Keshi, will announce the list of foreign based players who will be invited to a training camp in Faro (Portugal) in advance of naming the squad for the African Nations Cup.
Yes we all love Shola and he’s become a bit of a cult here but if results/injuries dictated that Newcastle United desperately needed him, should we expect him to give up (if selected for Nigeria) his African Nations adventure?
