…it gave the manager the chance to give a few more ticks to promising young players like Tavernier and Bigirimana, while at the same time putting a thick black line through the likes of Obertan and Marveaux.
In its own way though this trip to Greece ticked a decent number of boxes. It gave players like Campbell, Amalfitano and Bigirimana the chance to make their competitive first team debuts and gave fringe players valuable game time.
He’s got ability and the confidence, if he could make the massive step up to the first team in the next year or two it would give a huge lift to those following him through the ranks at St.James’ Park.
Transfer activity at full-back position seems highly likely for Newcastle United this summer with Danny Simpson a more than likely departure and a number of possible incomers such as Dutch full-back Erik Pieters, Palace’s Nathaniel Clyne and Cabaye’s friend and ex-colleague, Mathieu Debuuchy.
