It is curious from a Newcastle point of view that Shola is saying he is fully fit and over a week ago he was also saying he would definitely be ok for international duty. Yet at Cardiff on Saturday he wasn’t even on the bench.
The moans and groans at Cardiff were ill deserved when he replaced Loic Remy, I can understand if we were trailing or drawing at the time and looking to open the hosts up. The reality though is that the home side were on the up and having their best go at retrieving something from the match.
Interesting to hear Williamson talk about a ‘back to basics’ approach which summed up his performance, give or take that one mistake when his indecision wide on the right eventually resulted in a goal.
Loic Remy will earn all the plaudits for his two expertly taken goals but it was Yohan Cabaye who really ran the game for Newcastle, his redemption from the summer transfer debacle now all but complete with the former Lille player looking back to his best and delivering one of his best performances in a black and white shirt.
