The Premier League form table ahead of Chelsea v Newcastle

The Premier League form table tells its own story for both Newcastle United and Chelsea.

Whilst the two Manchester clubs are fighting it out at the very top of the Premier League, Chelsea are quietly going about their business.

The 1-0 win over Swansea last night putting them third top with 29 points, three behind Man Utd and 11 behind leaders Man City.

They have formidable recent form in these last six games, five wins and a draw putting them only behind Man City with their perfect score in the last six games, though Man City’s record was retained only due to an injury time goal from Sterling last night to beat Southampton 2-1.

Adapting to life after Diego Costa (52 goals in 86 PL starts + 3 as sub), Chelsea have had an up and down experience when it comes to scoring goals, the last six games seeing only one goal on four occasions, as well as putting four past West Brom and Watford.

Newcastle’s draw at The Hawthorns on Tuesday brought an end to a run of four defeats but the win over Palace will slip off this Premier League form table and if Chelsea win, it would pretty much ensure the Magpies would then be bottom of the form table on Saturday night.

Whilst we hope that the West Brom game may kickstart the season once again as the likes of Mikel Merino and one or two others (Lascelles) get back to full fitness, there is some additional comfort to be drawn from the fact that three of the Premier League’s bottom four are also in the bottom three of the Premier League form table below.

The exception being Crystal Palace who may be showing small signs of finding form, they have lost only one of their last five games, though three of those matches  have been draws, the sixth game in this recent form sequence being when Palace lost to Merino’s  late winner at St James Park.

A point (or better) would be obviously brilliant for Newcastle at Stamford Bridge and would really set Rafa’s team up for consecutive home games with Leicester (9 Dec)and Everton (13 Dec).

Having  scored only one goal in four of their last six Premier League matches, Chelsea suggest they are not invincible, though Newcastle will have to defend far better than in recent matches.

Here is the Premier League form table which covers the past six matches for all teams:
