German third tier club Chemnitzer FC have announced that  ‘Top club Newcastle United is coming to Chemnitz’.

The Chemnitzer FC official website;

Chemnitz FC  will play on Friday, 13 July 2012 a friendly match against top English club Newcastle United FC. The encounter with the ‘Magpies’ will kick off at 18:30 clock in the stadium at the Gellert road’.

The German side have also announced that Newcastle will be bringing a full strength team.

Chemnitzer FC plays in the club-owned Stadion an der Gellertstraße which has a capacity of 16,061 spectators. Until 1990 the facility was officially known as “Dr. Kurt-Fischer-Stadion”, or locally as the “Fischerwiese”. During its two Bundesliga seasons the club also made use of the larger Chemnitzer Sportforum, which has a capacity of over 19,000.

On this occasion though they seem to be indicating that the match will take place at their smaller traditional home ground.

We still await official confirmation from the Newcastle end but the Chief Executive Officer and Head Coach of the German team have both been quoted saying how much they are looking forward to the match.

Head Coach Gerd Harmful; “We are very happy to be able to play our last pre-season game against an opponent so attractive. Chemnitz can look forward to a top international club, which will require all of our team’s efforts”.

CEO Dr.Mathias Hanel added; “We can be proud that such an ambitious club will give their stamp of approval in the stadium at the Gellert Road”.

The German club is in what was formerly East Germany, close to the Czech border. Nearest international airports in Germany are at Dresden and Leipzig.
