Gallowgate Flags ‘Legends’ day at Newcastle v Cardiff today

The people behind Gallowgate Flags are putting on a ‘Legends’ day display today, before the Newcastle v Cardiff match.

The 12 Newcastle United Legends on the flags are listed below and it is NUFC supporters who have funded the purchase of them.

The dozen to be honoured are Kevin Keegan, Peter Beardsley, Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby Robson, Colin Veitch, Bill McCracken, Hughie Gallacher, Stan Seymour, Jackie Milburn, Joe Harvey, Bob Moncur and Malcolm Macdonald.

There will be a repeat of the normal Gallowgate Flags display from 2.30pm, then the legends ones from 2.50pm.

Earlier this month, one of the organisers told the Chronicle a bit of background to the idea:

“It’s going to be a day to celebrate the players who helped build the club into what it is today. Most fans will know who they all are but some of the younger fans might not, so it’s also about getting those players some recognition.”

The flag displays earlier in the season came to an abrupt halt due to a lack of volunteers and using their Twitter account, Gallowgate Flags have appealed for fans to help them today, with flags having been left in ‘random seats’ for supporters to lend a helping hand or two.

Gallowgate Flags:

“Get to St James Park for half 2 for the normal display legends at 2:50pm.

“Gallowgate today – flags left in random seats – so if you get to the ground and see one, just grab it!

“They’ve not been left in specific seats.

“And please remember to leave flags where you found them or return us to them 15 minutes after the game.”
