Put plainly, the odds are simply stacked too high against Newcastle for it to justify going all out and playing every available first choice player. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, and not one that I would like to have to take, but in the grander scheme of things it is beginning to look like a necessary evil.
This is why the January window is so vital. Newcastle’s defence has been stripped to the bone. This year’s midfield is the ugly sister compared to last year’s Cinderella– with Cabaye and Ben Arfa out until the New Year, there is precious little creativity.
In order to move forward as a club, we need to attract the type of players who want to be in the Champions League. Winning a cup might improve our domestic reputation but will do little if we want to attract foreign stars.
