Well, selecting a Newcastle street at random, say, Clayton Street, have a walk down there councillors. Every other shop is a pay day loan company of some description, although maybe on principle you don’t accept their rents and business rates from these bastions of financial respectability?
Of all our recent owners/directors, Ashley has the most finance at his disposal, it would be a huge pleasure to see someone back up their words with genuine actions. I still have many doubts that Pardew is the man to guide us to that particular Narnia, but Ashley must at least provide the tools for him.
There are clearly elements of the squad not totally in trusting of Pardew’s methods, we are tactically naïve, technically lacking in some areas and have the overall lightning pace in the squad of tectonic plates. I confess to realising that Pardew is probably not going to get any better than this and considering he was hired to progress us, then logic dictates that having done so, he passes the baton on when his race is run.
Ashley gambled by not pulling the trigger after the derby, when it would have been easy and popularist to do so, following a principle he’s employed in his business life. He is a gambler businessman, he is used to playing for high stakes, this time he’s gambling his £240 million investment and the £60 million tv money.
I saw many youngsters, from those with parents to teenagers obviously making their first visit. These are the ones that need to be encouraged, and results like Thursday can only help. Obviously over time they’ll learn the harsh reality, becoming cynical and embittered!
I have never seen us win a domestic trophy of note and my birthdays are whizzing round like a Bigg Market taxi meter. I was too young to celebrate the Fairs Cup win despite the casual attitude to the legal drinking age by many Newcastle bars.
This is about a city, a region, a shared belief that the stadium that overlooks this great city represents everything the citizens stand for. Stick with the plan if you must Mike and Derek, after all, what have you got to lose???
