Fulham fans’ comments before AND after the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United
Fulham fans have commenting before AND after the Newcastle United match at Craven Cottage,
A 1-1 draw yesterday. Interesting to compare and contrast what Fulham fans had to say pre and post-match.
Fulham fans comment via their Friends of Fulham and Fulham Web message boards:
PRE-MATCH
‘I saw this about Newcastle “they have scored just once from their past 47 shots in all competitions.” which always worries me!!!’
‘Hell, we’ve only scored once from our past 40 shots in all competitions!’
‘This really needs to be a win by multiple goals. We’re at home against a struggling team with a manager under fire, and who have had two fewer rest days than us plus have a player suspended.’
I certainly don’t think we will lose this one. If (and it’s a big if) we get our shooting boots on then a win may a good margin is a distinct possibility.’
‘Of course we will beat Newcastle.’
‘4-0’
‘This is the time when we should beat them. If you look at their results so far this season the standout loss is 4-1 to Coventry.’
‘Not that anyone will be really interested, but at one time in my younger days, my neighbour in Worcester Park in Surrey was Charlie Mitten, who was a lovely man. I have a feeling that Bobby Robson moved into the same house when Charlie moved.’
‘Newcastle lost 1-0 at home to Everton and it should have been by a lot more.’
‘Newcastle have some very good players, so whilst they looked disjointed on Monday night, clicking into gear can’t be too far away. Any hint of complacency from our lads and they will get a result.’
‘Need to stick with an unchanged team. Playing some good football at the minute and fancy us to beat Newcastle.’
POST-MATCH
‘Leno is my MOTM. Without him that’s a painful loss.’
‘Fulham had more possession today, but Newcastle made better use of theirs. We had 58% possession, with 7 shots and only 2 on target, compared with Newcastle’s 42% possession, 9 shots and 5 on target. We were really lucky to come away with a point.’
‘I gave it to Leno who made some tremendous saves which kept us in the game. Newcastle would have won it at the end when Hall was right in front of goal, if it wasn’t for Big Bernt. ‘
‘The bromance between Rob Jones and Dan Burn seems to be blossoming. I’ve never seen a player given so much ref time.’
‘Indeed. Burn was in the ear of the Jones so often, it gave the impression the pair of them must be refereeing the game together.
Credit to Jones however. He didn’t appear to let Burn’s incessant commentary sway him.’
‘Well it was okay I suppose. But two points lost means we have to win them against the odds somewhere else.
Leno absolutely superb (getting better rather than washed up) but motm must go to Muniz for his physical bombardment of the Newcastle defence turned the match.
Unfortunately the best all time Fulham player on show was Dan Burn, no longer the hopeless bandylegs of yore, who skillfully stymied much our play.’
‘Good point, all told. Great performances from both keepers.’
‘Better than defeat but we need to be winning these games.’
‘Could have, and probably should have, won that, but at least we got something from the game. Muniz the biggest positive from this game, he should definitely start in the next one.’
‘I agree on paper, but Newcastle played better than most of us were expecting. They easily had the better chances today. When you go behind while looking like you have the attacking force of a blunt spoon, a rescued point becomes pretty good.’

‘I leave happy with that effort from the team. It could have gone either way. Toon must have thought they had won it and Harvey Barnes was denied his 100th goal as a bonus.’
‘Second week in a row where the oppo keeper is probably their MoTM, we just need a bit more luck and we’ll be fine. We’re restricting teams to minimal chances so if we can’t score at least we’re solid at the back. Few players not at their best today, think Charles was below the standard he set in the first 9 but they’re not robots and it happens. We need to find a way to be a bit quicker at getting it forward, amount of times today GG made a run and no pass came was criminal and whilst I appreciate we want to control the game via possession, I’d risk turning it over a few times to try something different. AA’s subs were correct again today so positives across the board, it’s more annoying that for the first time this season Newcastle decided to revert to bus parking tactics compared to being gun-ho like they did in the first 9.’
‘Battle of the keepers and both teams could have won. Probably a fair result.
I will say it’s getting boring watching teams park the bus against us.’
‘We created some good chances in the second half and were unlucky not to convert more of them. But for all our possession, we still don’t create enough chances or finish enough of the ones we do create. As SerbianLad pointed out in the matchday thread, “Same old story. We dominate the game but are wasteful in the final third, whether it’s poor final ball or poor finishing (or sometimes great GK saves, tbf). Same story for pretty much the entire season so far.”‘
‘But we really didn’t dominate the game. We had more possession, but Newcastle was fine with that. In terms of chances, it was very equal.’
‘I gave Leno a bit of stick earlier in the season, but he has certainly redeemed himself by much improved performances recently, and he will deservedly win MOTM. The save against Lewis Hall at the end make me jump out of my seat. I felt like it was all huff and puff from us today without much end product. A step down from recent performances where we should have scored 5 in each if we could finish at all. Great to see Muniz reinvigorated, and hopefully he can help with that problem going forward. The referee had a good game.’
‘Fair result in the end as really not much in it between both sides. Thought Bassey and Leno were our best players, but a big shoutout to Berge in the first half as he was immense. Iwobi I thought was also very good first half. We started the second half slow and that gave Newcastle a bit more belief; Palacios was great when he came on IMO, as was Muniz.’
‘Two fairly evenly matched teams settled for some dull stuff in the first half and Newcastle came out after the break far perkier than our lads. Draw is a reasonable result under circumstances.
Not sure I learned much new about our team or individuals. Thought I’d sleep on it before posting, perhaps some inspiration would arrive overnight. It hasn’t. Palacios is obviously going to be a fine player, but it’s equally obvious that we are something of a learning experience for him and that pass was a mistake of callow youth.
As an England supporter, Lewis Hall’s performance was a small comfort. To these eyes, the best player on the pitch.’
