‘Why did Man U not buy him…Eddie Howe used him sparingly’ Troy Deeney highlights Newcastle United stars
Troy Deeney has picked his best 12 performers from the top tier action.
The Premier League team of the weekend (and manager) that have most impressed him.
Included in his dozen choices are two from Newcastle United.
This pair playing key roles in Saturday’s win at St James’ Park.
In the Premier League, Newcastle United getting the better of a previously unbeaten Hull City 2-1.
Troy Deeney explains why he has chosen Joe Willock and Lewis Hall for his Premier League team of the week and then the full eleven (twelve) are listed below:
Lewis Hall (Newcastle United):
“Goals, assists, keeps getting better. After Man U playing the way they did against Fulham you wonder how did they not spend the money on getting him in.”
I always laugh at this attitude in the media that the only reason a Newcastle United player hasn’t moved to Old Trafford is because they didn’t meet a supposed asking price.
Newcastle United were never going to sell Lewis Hall this summer, Troy Deeney and others conveniently ‘forget’ to mention that Hall is a lifelong United fan and so are all of his family, then of course why on earth would the best left-back in the country sign for the shambles that is Man U?
Joe Willock (Newcastle United):
“He’s really coming out of his shell this season. Like a few players, previous boss Eddie Howe used him sparingly but now he’s playing week in, week out. A few injuries mean he’s the main man again in midfield. High energy, goals, just that ability to take people on and drag you 50 yards up the pitch is amazing.”
It was never a case of Eddie Howe not rating Joe Willock. Back in 2022/23 when United reached Wembley and finished fourth in the Premier League, Willock was an automatic first choice player who was excellent that season. He then though picked up one injury after another and struggled to get fully fit and find form since that stand out season.
As for Eddie Howe using Joe Willock “sparingly”, last season the former Arsenal player actually made 39 appearances for Newcastle United, 18 starts and 21 as a sub. However, he only showed his best form very occasionally and in the 39 appearances only scored one goal, ironically in Paris against PSG in a 1-1 draw as the French club went on to retain their Champions League title.
It has though been great this season to see Joe Willock thrive again on the responsibility now of having to be a key player, already scoring three key goals against Liverpool, Millwall and Hull.
