Eddie Howe reflects on getting the job done against Crystal Palace – League AND Cup progress

Eddie Howe watched on as his team progressed to the next round of the League Cup.

The fourth round (last sixteen) match will be played a few days before Christmas and Newcastle United will discover their opponents after Thursday night’s Man U v Villa match.

With the likes of Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal all exiting the competition on Wednesday night, it made this win over Palace even sweeter.

Eddie Howe acknowledging that his team hadn’t been at their best but as he says, the most / only important thing is getting through to the next round.

The NUFC Head Coach pointing to the fact that so many of his players who started this game, had played little / no football recently. Something that often comes when you have a settled team winning in the Premier League.

A calculated / necessary gamble saw Eddie Howe change eight of his ten outfield players but it was arguably the fact that he kept Nick Pope in the team that ended up the deciding factor.

A seventh clean sheet now in fifteen appearances and then three superb penalty saves in the shoot out, no wonder Eddie Howe declared after the match that ‘We are indebted to Nick Pope.’

Eddie Howe reflects on the cup win over Crystal Palace:

“The most important thing is that you are in the hat for the next round.

“Very difficult, a tight game tonight.

“Probably everything we expected it would be.

“I don’t think it was a great performance from us and we were a little bit disjointed.

“I think there are valid reasons for that, as a lot of the players hadn’t played for a long period of time.

“I thought they gave it everything but we weren’t particularly fluid in our play.

“We improved with the introduction of the substitutes.

“They made a real difference to the team but we couldn’t force a goal in normal time, so we had to do it the hard way…

“You prefer to do it in normal time but if it’s penalty shootout, you have still got to find a way to win.

“We are indebted to Nick Pope for some great saves.”

Eddie Howe on the injury / fitness situation following this win over Crystal Palace:

“Ryan Fraser (who wasn’t in Wednesday’s matchday squad) has got a calf problem.

“Not sure how serious that is.

“I think everyone else, hopefully, has come through OK.”

Eddie Howe on Nick Pope (in the middle of our goal…):

“I have got to say, the first penalty save was right out of the top drawer.

“There was actually a save in the first half that again, I thought was right out of the top drawer as well.

“So it wasn’t just in the penalty shoot out.

“He has been doing that for us all season.

“He is a very commanding figure but he has kept goal with such low fuss.

“It sort of goes unnoticed what a difference he’s made.”
