Three Newcastle United defenders ruled out by injury

Two weeks on Saturday the Premier League season kicks off for NUFC, with three Newcastle United defenders currently ruled out by injury.

Defence of course though, is where Newcastle probably have the most strength in depth.

Since the turn of the year we have seen a goalkeeper and four defenders bought in, as well as striker Chris Wood and midfielder Bruno G.

Thankfully no first choice Newcastle United defenders are currently injured but always good to have options and hopefully this trio will be back soon.

Steve Bruce paid £15m for Jamal Lewis and then after only five months, he totally sidelined him from Premier League action, the final eight months of Bruce seeing not a single Lewis start in the league.

A lot of talk about Eddie Howe wanting to have a good look at the former Norwich defender in pre-season (he looked decent in four PL starts under Howe before injury struck) but a muscle injury is still preventing Jamal Lewis joining in with full training. So not the greatest of pre-seasons so far for the left-back.

Meanwhile, Federico Fernandez has also been missing from the two squads for the friendlies so far, Eddie Howe now confirming that he has a ‘a minimal calf injury’ which is preventing him being able to train. Howe stating ‘It’s tight but we’re taking it carefully to build him back up before he trains, he is one of the leaders of the group though, a very positive influence around the players so I’m delighted he’s here. We hope to get him back on the training pitch as soon as possible.’

Javier Manquillo hasn’t been seen at all this pre-season, either on Tyneside or in Austria.

Eddie Howe explaining his absence now as well: ‘He (Javier Manquillo) has (still) got a groin problem that he had at the end of last season. It wasn’t fixed in the summer and so he is away having treatment (over in Spain) but I think he should be back maybe around the Portugal trip, or maybe just after, to train.’
