Newcastle United now switch to Sekou Mara signing after Hugo Ekitike saga – Report

Sekou Mara is the new target for Newcastle United according to new reports from France.

RMC Sport say that Newcastle have now turned to the 19 year old after losing out on Hugo Ekitike.

The Ekitike saga appears to have ended now with the FC Reims striker set to sign for PSG, if he hasn’t already done so.

At least on the surface, the two strikers have very similar profiles and no surprise then if indeed there is interest from Newcastle United.

Sekou Mara has just had his first big season of first team football in Ligue 1 but still hasn’t played that many minutes. There were eight league starts and 18 sub appearances but still only 895 minutes played.

The 6ft tall striker scored six goals, with five of those coming in his last seven appearances (both starting and as a sub) of the season.

The emergence of Sekou Mara was one of the very few bright spots of a season where Bordeaux finished rock bottom of Ligue 1 and were relegated. Worse was to come though, as due to financial issues the authorities have relegated them to the third tier of French football, though Bordeaux are fighting this.

Whatever happens regarding that second demotion, Bordeaux clearly aren’t in a great position now and an injection of cash from a player who cost them nothing, will be tempting.

RMC Sport say that their information is that Bordeaux want a 15m euros (approx £12.75m) transfer fee, plus add-ons, plus a significant sell-on clause.

Sekou Mara looks like a real prospect and like Ekitike is versatile, able to play across the frontline.

Mara turns 20 on 30 July and is arguably now looking an even more exciting prospect than Ekitike.

Both were in the France Under 20s squad for this summer’s Maurice Revello tournament, which they ended up winning.

Hugo Ekitike made four appearances without scoring, whilst Sekou Mara ended up the tournament’s top scorer with five goals in five appearances. When added to that late season form and goals for Bordeaux, Mara looks to be a rapidly improving young striker, with loads of potential.
