Jack Harrison v Newcastle United current options, the facts – Why wouldn’t you take him?

Jack Harrison has been increasingly linked with Newcastle United.

The 25 year old having done well for Leeds United these past couple of years in the Premier League.

Whilst the Elland Road club have shown a willingness to wheel and deal this summer, selling star players Raphina and Phillips, whilst already investing over £90m in buys to rebuild their team, having only avoided relegation on the final day of last season.

So if Leeds were willing to do business if Newcastle met their asking price, surely a no-brainer for Newcastle United fans to welcome him in? Apparently not for a sizeable number of NUFC supporters.

Seemingly not convinced that Jack Harrison is the type of signing to help Eddie Howe’s team progress.

I’m a bit puzzled because when you look at the facts, I think he would be a major upgrade on many of the current options at St James’ Park.

Leeds United were promoted in May 2020 and this has been the Jack Harrison record on Premier League direct goal involvements (goals and assists) these past two seasons, compared to a number of Newcastle United players.

Jack Harrison

2020/21 (16 direct goal involvements – Scored 8 and 8 assists)

2021/22 (9 direct goal involvements – Scored 8 and 1 assist)

Total of 25 direct goal involvements (16 goals and 9 assists) these past two years

Jacob Murphy

2020/21 (5 direct goal involvements – Scored 2 and 3 assists)

2021/22 (3 direct goal involvements – Scored 1 and 2 assists)

Total of 8 direct goal involvements (3 goals and 5 assists) these past two years

Miguel Almiron

2020/21 (5 direct goal involvements – Scored 4 and 1 assist)

2021/22 (1 direct goal involvements – Scored 1 and 0 assists)

Total of 6 direct goal involvements (5 goals and 1 assist) these past two years

Jonjo Shelvey

2020/21 (4 direct goal involvements – Scored 1 and 3 assists)

2021/22 (3 direct goal involvements – Scored 2 and 1 assist)

Total of 7 direct goal involvements (3 goals and 4 assists) these past two years

Joe Willock

2020/21 (8 direct goal involvements – Scored 8 and 0 assists)

2021/22 (2 direct goal involvements – Scored 2 and 0 assists)

Total of 10 direct goal involvements (10 goals and 0 assists) these past two years

Ryan Fraser

2020/21 (2 direct goal involvements – Scored 0 and 2 assists)

2021/22 (5 direct goal involvements – Scored 2 and 3 assists)

Total of 7 direct goal involvements (2 goals and 5 assists) these past two years

Allan Saint-Maximin

2020/21 (7 direct goal involvements – Scored 3 and 4 assists)

2021/22 (10 direct goal involvements – Scored 5 and 5 assists)

Total of 17 direct goal involvements (8 goals and 9 assists) these past two years

As you can see, when it comes to the most difficult part of the game – scoring and creating goals, Jack Harrison has been way ahead of any of these Newcastle wingers and midfielders these past two seasons.

Only ASM with 17 has got anywhere remotely close to the 25 Jack Harrison direct goal involvements.

Joe Willock had that purple patch of goals at the end of that 2020/21 season but even though he played better in the second half of last season, absolutely nothing to suggest still that the goal spree at the end of that 20/21 season was anything but a one-off.

I think Jack Harrison would be a great addition and I think part of the problem for some Newcastle fans is that they see foreign signings as more exciting because they tend to know a lot less about them. So more of a hope that you will get somebody far better than the reality usually proves to be.

Jack Harrison has scored and created these 25 goals in two seasons playing in the most difficult league, so I don’t know what better recommendation you could have???
