Eddie Howe talks about competing with PSG and Hugo Ekitike decision
Eddie Howe has already bought seven new players in 2022.
After years of neglect and failure to properly invest on and off the pitch at NUFC, the new Newcastle United owners forced to play catch up.
Eddie Howe already backed with £160m+ to bring in Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn, Chris Wood, Nick Pope, Matt Targett, Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier.
The rebuild is continuing though and Eddie Howe has already previously admitted that he is also looking to add additional attacking players in the remainder of the transfer window.
On 1 June 2022, the FC Reims President announced that they had received an acceptable offer for Hugo Ekitike and it was now up to the player and his agents whether to complete the deal.
Forty five days later, Hugo Ekitike agreed his move, to PSG.
Saturday bringing the news that the signing had been agreed.
Now Eddie Howe has admitted that Newcastle United were trying to sign the young French striker and added that this shows how difficult things are in the transfer window, the kind of clubs NUFC are now competing with, such as PSG.
Eddie Howe talking about Hugo Ekitike signing for PSG on Saturday:
“It is no secret that we really liked Hugo Ekitike.
“We worked hard to try and do that deal.
“He is a very talented lad but he decided to go to PSG.
“I have no hard feelings toward him and wish him well in the next phase of his career.
“I really do wish him luck.
“This is an example of the types of clubs we are competing with, to try and improve our squad.
“It is not as easy as people think it is and you are going to miss out on targets and look at other options.
“I have done that before in my career and I am sure it won’t be the last.”
