‘St James Park has best atmosphere’ – German Premier League star

St James Park is a very different place now.

A combination of Mike Ashley’s ownership and Steve Bruce’s management had made home games feel like a chore much of the time.

Poor football and an ever worse atmosphere. Ashley achieving the near impossible but it had taken over 14 years, Newcastle fans having lost all hope and that then showing with games at times played in near silence.

However, the removal of Mike Ashley and his minions such as Steve Bruce and Lee Charnley has transformed the mood.

On 20 November 2021 it was the first game under the new owners AND Eddie Howe, a very good performance and what should have been a comfortable win, only for two Karl Darlow errors to lead to a 3-3 draw.

Brentford star Vitaly Janelt started that Howe debut match and obviously the memory has stayed with him, when asked by German media ‘Which stadium in England has the best atmosphere?’ he has went for St James Park.

It has ended up being some season for Newcastle United, especially at home.

Since the positive changes of ownership / management were made in the Autumn, St James Park has been a very different place, seven wins at home in the final eight games, whilst the atmospheres have gone up so many levels, culminating in that one against Arsenal which was top class.

Vitaly Janelt asked by Sport Buzzer ‘Which stadium in England has the best atmosphere?’

“We can only fit 17,000 spectators (at Brentford) but the atmosphere is always great.

“Away from home, I liked Newcastle best.

“It (St James Park) is a typical English stadium.

“The new owners had just arrived, so there was a lot of euphoria among the Newcastle fans anyway.

“Then the game ended 3:3.

“The atmosphere was outstanding.”
