Diego Carlos is finally on his way to the Premier League.

The Sevilla central defender was seemingly on his way to Newcastle United for most of January, in the end though staying to help the Spanish club reach the Champions League semi-finals and finish fourth in La Liga.

Thursday afternoon though bringing official confirmation that now he has…agreed to join Aston Villa!

Villa have released a statement (see below) stating that the deal is agreed between the two clubs, with Diego Carlos now on his way to England to go through his medical and agree final personal terms.

Interesting to see how he does now in the Premier League.

Looking back, this was the last time the potential arrival of Diego Carlos was covered on The Mag…

The Mag – 25 January 2022:

‘Still no successful conclusion to the Diego Carlos move to St James Park saga.

Indeed, Sky Sports are reporting that their information is that Newcastle United are now looking at alternatives to the Brazilian centre-back.

The broadcaster saying that the Newcastle United owners have had enough of Sevilla keep upping the price time after time, following each new bid.

Sky Sports saying that the La Liga club originally indicated that a bid of around 30m euros (approx £25.1m) could land Diego Carlos, only for a number of unsuccessful NUFC bids to leave that figure well behind with still no conclusion.’

In the end Newcastle United signed up Dan Burn and what a star he has proved to be!

The Geordie defender a key element in the surge up the table under Eddie Howe, he turned 30 this month but for £13m has been an absolute steal.

Diego Carlos also turns 30 this coming season and considering some of the increasingly crazy figures Newcastle were being quoted supposedly in January, interesting to see what kind of figure is generally reported in the media.

Whoever you would credit in particular, Unai Emery or Diego Carlos or whoever…no denying how well Sevilla have done defensively this past season.

They ended up fourth in the table but with the lowest goals conceded, letting in 30 in 38 La Liga games, with title winners Real Madrid conceding 31, the second lowest total.

Aston Villa official announcement – 26 May 2022:

‘Aston Villa can confirm the Club has reached an agreement with Sevilla FC for the transfer of Diego Carlos for an undisclosed fee.

The player will travel to England in the next few hours to complete a medical and finalise personal terms.

Diego Carlos, a Brazilian central defender, has been a virtual ever-present in Sevilla’s successful La Liga and European campaigns over the last three seasons, playing 136 matches, including in Sevilla’s victorious appearance in the 2020 Europa League final against Inter Milan.’
