3 Newcastle United players not available for Arsenal match plus 3 doubtful – Official update
Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media on Thursday morning.
The Newcastle United Head Coach talking to journalists ahead of the game against Arsena, the Monday night game with an 8pm kick-off.
Eddie Howe giving an update on the fitness, injury and availability situation regarding various Newcastle United players.
Eddie Howe had said ahead of the Man City match that Ryan Fraser was very unlikely to be seen again this season, then after the final whistle at the Etihad, the NUFC Head Coach explained the surprise absence of another two Newcastle United players.
“Joe Willock has had a knee problem for a couple of months and we felt it was gone.
“However, it came back against Liverpool last week, so it looks like his season is over.
“Jonjo Shelvey has a calf injury, which is quite similar to the one he had at the start of this season.
“So it looks like both players will be out for the (rest of the) season.”
Jonjo Shelvey had actually been seen at Disney in Paris ahead of Sunday’s match, with a photo posted on Twitter.
In better news of course, we saw both Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson named in Sunday’s matchday squad and getting the final 20 minutes against Man City when the pair both came off the bench.
Now on Thursday morning, Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Newcastle – 12 May 2022:
Eddie Howe on Jonjo Shelvey:
“Jonjo has quite a serious calf injury – similar to the one he sustained at the start of the season.
“He’ll be out for a period of time but we expect him back for the start of pre-season, with no problems.”
Eddie Howe on Joe Willock:
“Joe has had an issue with a tendon in his knee for quite a while.
“We thought we’d solved the problem, but it’s come back, so he needs a period of rest.
“He’s had a couple of injections in his knee and we anticipate he’ll be fine for pre-season.”
Eddie Howe on Fraser:
“Ryan returned to training yesterday – which has been great to see – and has trained very well.
“Fingers crossed that he’s fine.”
Eddie Howe also spoke to journalists on Thursday morning about the position with Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier:
“Both players would say they’re very keen to start but my job is to make sure I’m doing what’s best for the team.
“We’ve got to make sure they’re fit enough to last a long period in the game.
“We’ll make a decision based on the training week.”
So, the position as it stands this morning is that both Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock are ruled out of Monday’s match and the Burnley one, whilst Eddie Howe also said that Federico Fernandez has an Achilles problem, making it three Newcastle United players definitely not under consideration for the team against Arsenal.
Meanwhile, very good news that Ryan Fraser is back training and has a chance of playing again this season.
However, along with Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson, another three Newcastle United players where it is doubtful on whether they will be in Eddie Howe’s thoughts for Monday night’s starting eleven.
I think Trippier and Wilson will definitely make the bench again and almost certainly get more minutes as subs, before potentially starting at Burnley in the final match of the season. Whilst Ryan Fraser I think sounds like an outside chance of making the bench for Arsenal.
As Eddie Howe indicates though, he won’t be taking any unnecessary risks with any players. Only eleven weeks between this season ending and the 2022/23 one starting, so the last thing he wants is having any Newcastle United players unavailable when the squad reports back for pre-season, most likely the beginning of July.
