Patrick Vieira talks frustration after losing to Newcastle United – Fair comments

Patrick Vieira had his Crystal Palace team in their best form of the season.

A seven game run bringing five wins and two draws, getting through to an FA Cup semi-final and picking up 11 points from a possible 15 in the Premier League.

Then eleven days ago, Crystal Palace lost 2-1 at Leicester in the Premier League, followed by losing 2-0 to Chelsea at Wembley exactly a week later, then three days further forward and a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

Patrick Vieira left frustrated and disappointed, declaring ‘It has been a challenging week’…however, the Palace boss insisting ‘this is a young team who will grow with experience.’

When analysing Wednesday night’s match, I think fair comments from Patrick Vieira.

He admits Newcastle United started the better and basically thinks they wanted it more than his own team, certainly in the first half. Newcastle well on top and scoring that great Almiron goal, could and should have potentially added another before the break, plus what looked a clear penalty for handball denied.

The half-time team talk from Patrick Vieira definitely had some impact and possibly Newcastle tiring a bit as it was exactly the same team that beat Leicester on Sunday. Whatever the cause(s), Palace got on top the second-half BUT Newcastle United’s new defensive resilience under Eddie Howe paying big dividends, as Palace only managed two weak efforts on target in the entire match.

Patrick Vieira reflecting on Crystal Palace losing 1-0 to Newcastle United:

“It has been a challenging week.

“But this is a young team who will grow with experience.

“How to manage the disappointment of the (FA Cup) semi-final into the next game at Newcastle.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted but I believe as a team we will learn from those situations and that is good for the future.

“It’s frustrating.

“I was really pleased with the second-half, the way we competed in the second-half.

“We didn’t enter the game well and I wasn’t pleased at all with the way we fought, especially in the first 20 minutes or half-an-hour.

“We gave them the momentum and the belief.

“We tried to play a bit more quickly in the second-half.

“We had possession but we didn’t manage to create many chances.

“At half-time the message was to really understand what we wanted.

“Before talking about what we could improve tactically, it was important to compete.

“After that we can start to put our passing game in place, but that will not be enough if we are not competing in the first ball, the second ball or running in behind.

“I got the answer I wanted, but we didn’t score that goal and I was disappointed with the performance overall.

“JP [Mateta] and Macca [James McArthur] brought a little bit more energy to the team [when they came on]. We managed to play more going forwards, JP stretched the back four going in behind.

“We created some situations, but the final ball wasn’t the best at times and we struggled to create chances.”
