Newcastle United deadline day final count up – Two in and five out

The Newcastle United deadline day of the January transfer window has now passed.

At 11pm on Monday night, we could at last sit back and have a look at the new faces that have come in, as well as those that have headed out.

This Newcastle United deadline day was a ‘little’ different to what had become the norm under Mike Ashley, a case of wondering just who might NUFC be capable of signing…

As compared to tumbleweed blowing past the training ground and always the underlying fear that Mike Ashley might give us an unwelcome January surprise, as was the case when Andy Carroll, Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba left Newcastle in various January windows.

So what was the final count up on Newcastle United transfers in and out on this January 2022 deadline day:

At 6pm, a loan until the end of the season for Matt Targett (pictured above) was announced.

After starting 55 of Villa’s last 57 PL matches, Matt Targett lost his place earlier this month when Digne signed from Everton. The 26 year old left-back moving to Newcastle for regular first team football.

At around 10.45pm, finally confirmation that Dan Burn had signed for NUFC.

The 29 year old lifelong Newcastle fan arriving for a reported £13m.

The left footed versatile defender can play centre-back and left-back, Burn signing a two and a half year contract.

(Overall in January, NUFC signing five players, with Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes recruited earlier in the month)

All the outgoing deals turned out to be loan arrangements until the end of this season…

Freddie Woodman – Joining up with Bournemouth, currently third in the Championship.

Matty Bondswell – The 19 year old defender heading off to Shrewsbury who are currently sixteenth in League One.

Elliot Anderson – Joey Barton taking the 19 year old midfielder to Bristol Rovers, who are currently sit twelfth in League Two.

Matty Longstaff – The 21 year old midfielder moving to Mansfield, who are currently sixth in League Two.

Jeff Hendrick – The final NUFC deadline deal, Hendrick celebrating his 30th birthday on Monday and his present being a move to QPR who are fourth in the Championship.

So the final Newcastle United deadline day count up was two in and five out.

(Overall in January, NUFC moving out seven players, all but one on loan. With earlier this month Rosaire Longelo signing a permanent deal at Accrington Stanley (currently thirteenth in League One), whilst Joe White went to Hartlepool (sixteenth in League Two) on loan).

As for those others that hit the woodwork or at least were attempted…

A transfer fee was agreed with Reims for Hugo Etikite, reported to be around the £25m mark, plus add-ons. However, with only 11 league starts in his entire career so far, the 19 year old deciding too early to move, choosing instead to get regular football for the rest of the season in Ligue 1.

The collapse of that transfer led to an attempt by Newcastle to revive a move for Jesse Lingard, only for Man Utd to refuse to let the midfielder move anywhere on deadline day.

It was then reported that NUFC were making a very last gasp attempt to hijack the Dele Alli move to Everton. Not sure how true that one was but Alli signed for the scousers regardless.

Various media have reported that two Newcastle United players turned down loan moves on Monday.

Those two being Ciaran Clark and Jamal Lewis, with the pair claimed to have turned down Championship clubs Middlesbrough and Birmingham respectively.
