Sky Sports give clarity on Newcastle United ‘bid’ for Lucas Digne

Wednesday brought widespread reporting that Lucas Digne was Newcastle United’s next target they hoped to land in this January window.

Kieran Trippier having flown into Newcastle on Wednesday lunchtime and taken straight to the training ground to begin his medical.

The England international set to be the first signing of this new Newcastle United owners and Eddie Howe era, as well as the first of this window. Atletico Madrid having accepted Newcastle’s offer of £12m plus future add-ons.

With fans just awaiting the formal completion of Trippier’s signing, journalists increasingly switched attention to Lucas Digne as Wednesday wore on.

This culminated in Sky Sports announcing late last night, that Newcastle had ‘made a £22.5m bid for Lucas Digne, with Sean Longstaff offered to Everton as part of the deal.’

Keith Downie covers NUFC for Sky Sports and he brought that news, only to then swiftly add a ‘clarification’: ‘For clarity: Everton want Longstaff and have made an offer…Discussions have taken place over Digne and Newcastle are interested, but no ‘official’ bid placed.’

Kieran Trippier arriving is a massive boost BUT if Lucas Digne could be persuaded to come to St James Park as well, that would be an amazing upgrade.

No disrespect…BUT to go from the options Newcastle United have at full-back / wing-back to having current England and France internationals (Trippier started for England as recently as October 2021 and Digne for France in November 2021), would be amazing.

Lucas Digne has had a well publicised bust up with Rafa Benitez and hasn’t played a single minute of football for Everton these past five weeks, Rafa already having paid £17m for Mykolenko to replace what seems sure to be an outgoing Digne.

The 28 year old left-back arrived in 2018 for around £17m from Barcelona and great to see Newcastle United pitching for this level of player.

Naturally, as Newcastle fans we DO accept that when your team is second bottom halfway through the season with only one win, it does create a major obstacle in persuading some players to sign, even though the long-term promises the potential of far better times on the horizon.

If Lucas Digne can be landed that would be great, but with everything we have seen and heard so far, there is every reason to be confident that if the Everton player doesn’t make the move, then NUFC will move on to other quality options.

Keith Downie of Sky Sports via Twitter – 5 January 2022:

“Newcastle have made a £22.5m bid for Lucas Digne, with Sean Longstaff offered to Everton as part of the deal.

“However left-back Digne has indicated he would prefer a move elsewhere, with London duo Chelsea and West Ham interested.”

Keith Downie of Sky Sports via Twitter – 5 January 2022:

“For clarity:

“Everton want Longstaff and have made an offer, however Newcastle are keen to keep the midfielder.

“Discussions have taken place over Digne and Newcastle are interested, but no ‘official’ bid placed.”
