Refusal to sell sees Newcastle United now focus on signing these two central defenders – Report
Sven Botman is now a definite no for Newcastle United in this January transfer window.
The Athletic were the first to reveal Newcastle’s interest some five weeks ago in early December, naming the Lille central defender as the top NUFC target of the January window.
Sven Botman set to turn 22 on Wednesday but with already an impressive CV, having been a key figure in Lille’s title win over PSG last (2020/2021) season.
The Athletic have detailed how Newcastle United have made two bids for the Dutch Under 21 international but now in their latest update on Monday, they have revealed that Lille are now adamant that they are going to keep Sven Botman at least until the end of this season.
With longstanding financial problems, Lille are generating cash via selling other players, whilst they are in the Champions League knockout stages and want to keep their defensive lynchpin in the hope of progressing further. The French club also feeling that potentially they could get even more cash in the summer for Sven Botman, when more clubs will be in a position to bid for the defender.
The Athletic say that with the knockback from Lille (unless there was a dramatic u-turn from the French club), Newcastle United are now focusing on landing two other central defenders.
These two being Diego Carlos of Sevilla which is a deal Newcastle have already been working on for some time, whilst they report that Benoit Badiashile of Monaco is also now a potential back-up alternative signing with Sven Botman no longer looking possible this month.
