Premier League permission from UEFA for CL slots to fit in postponed Newcastle United games

UEFA have always wanted to keep their Champions League nights free of competition from top tier domestic matches.

However, with so many matches to rearrange due to Covid postponements, the Premier League have got permission from UEFA for Champions League slots to be used, if needed.

It will be considered on a case to case basis and if no other feasible option, some Premier League games are set to be played on the same night(s) as Champions League matches.

This of course includes the two postponed Newcastle United games that need to be found new dates, away at both Everton and Southampton.

So far, three of the 18 postponed Premier League matches now have new dates and times:

Tuesday 11 January

Southampton v Brentford (7.45pm)

Everton v Leicester (8pm)

Wednesday 12 January

West Ham v Norwich (7.45pm)

With both Everton and Southampton having other rearranged matches next Tuesday, it means it will be later in January at the earliest, when Newcastle could be playing either of those away games.

This is the current full confirmed Newcastle United schedule up to the end of February 2022:

Saturday 8 January 3pm – Cambridge Home (FA Cup third round)

Saturday 15 January 3pm – Watford home

Saturday 22 January 3pm – Leeds away

(Weekend of Saturday 5 February – FA Cup fourth round)

Tuesday 8 February 7.45pm – Everton Home (BT Sport)

Sunday 13 February 2pm – Aston Villa Home (Sky Sports)

Saturday 19 February 12.30pm – West Ham Away (BT Sport)

Saturday 26 February 3pm – Brentford Away

(Midweek of Wednesday 2 March – FA Cup fifth round)

If the midweek slot between Saturday 15 and Saturday 22 January was used, it would mean either Everton or Southampton having to play five games between the 8 January and 22 January.

The potential of playing on Champions League nights, now adds the following possibilities for these two NUFC matches to be rearranged.

Round of Sixteen UEFA Champions League match nights:

February 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd

March 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th

Quarter-finals

April 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th

Semi-finals

April 26th. 27th

May 3rd, 4th
