Newcastle United now trying to sign Amadou Haidara – Report

Wednesday has brought reports that Newcastle United are trying to sign Amadou Haidara.

The central midfielder plays for RB Leipzig and he helped them finish runners up last (2020/21) season, though this time the German club are way back in ninth after 18 of the 34 games played.

Set to turn 24 on the final day of February, Amadou Haidara has been yet another success story for the Red Bull set-up of clubs.

Having started his career in Europe with RB Salzburg after they recruited the player from his native Mali as an 18 year old back in 2016. December 2018 saw the midfielder move over to RB Leipzig for £16m.

Now an exclusive from The Mail is reporting that Newcastle United are trying to make Amadou Haidara their third signing of the January window, with Kieran Trippier coming in last week and Chris Wood expected to be announced very shortly, having travelled up last night to begin his medical.

The Mail say that their information is that Amadou Haidara is another ‘key target’ for Newcastle United and that the player has a release clause of around £33m. However, that release clause not set to become active until the summer transfer window.

If though Amadou Haidara is heading out of RB Leipzig regardless this summer, then the German club could well be willing to do business this month, if Newcastle United have got serious interest and want to bid for the midfielder.

Newcastle’s current options in central midfield are far from good enough and it has been an area in need of better quality for a long long time.

Amadou Haidara is at the African Cup of Nations and is this afternoon playing the opening group match with Mali, helping them to a 1-0 lead over Tunisia, with currently around half an hour to go.

The midfielder gets a half decent number of goals and has scored nine in all competitions these past 18 months, including scoring as RB Leipzig beat Man Utd 3-2 in a Champions League match in December 2020.
