Newcastle United make new second bid for Diego Carlos and waiting for Sevilla answer – Report

Newcastle United last week saw a bid for Diego Carlos rejected.

That opening offer reported to have been £25m.

However, now Newcastle have went back and put in an improved bid for the Sevilla central defender, according to The Telegraph.

Jason Burt is Chief Football Correspondent for The Telegraph and he has broken the news on late Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, his colleague Luke Edwards had predicted that Newcastle would sign a central defender before the weekend based on what he had heard, though didn’t give a name.

Jason Burt says that Newcastle United are now waiting for Sevilla to give their answer to this second and improved bid.

Both Sven Botman and Diego Carlos have been heavily linked with Newcastle United indeed widely reported that if possible NUFC wanted to sign both. However, The Athletic did report that whilst Botman was the number one target, it was understood that Diego Carlos would be the more likely of the two to be landed, with Sevilla more inclined to sell than Lille. Plus, after the first bid was rejected, The Athletic did say that talks were continuing between Newcastle and Sevilla.

The 28 year old Carlos arrived at Sevilla from Nantes in a £13m deal two and a half years ago.

His first two seasons at Sevilla saw the club finish fourth both times, with the third best defensive record on each occasion.

This season, Diego Carlos has started 19 of the 20 La Liga games and Sevilla are second in the table, five points behind Real Madrid but with a game in hand, ten points clear of third. This success has been built on an outstanding defence with Diego Carlos at the heart of it, only 13 goals conceded in 20 games, Real Madrid having conceded five more.

Diego Carlos helped Sevilla win the Europa League in 2020 and helped Brazil win the Olympic title in the summer (2021) in Japan. He has been called up by the Brazil national side but yet to play for them.

With Kieran Trippier signing last week and Chris Wood on Tyneside now and set to be announced very soon, it appears clear that Newcastle United are continuing to chase a number of other signings in various positions.
