Newcastle United make higher second bid for Sven Botman after Trippier signing – Report
Newcastle United have now turned their attention back to Sven Botman, following the confirmed signing of Kieran Trippier on Friday morning.
At the start of December, the usually very reliable David Ornstein at The Athletic reported on Newcastle’s January plans, saying he ‘has learned that one of their primary targets is the Lille and Netherlands Under-21 centre-back Sven Botman.’
Signed from Ajax for £7m as a 20 year old in 2020, Sven Botman was a massive part of Lille’s remarkable title win las season, finishing a point above PSG. The young central defender starting 37 of the 38 Ligue 1 matches, helping Lille concede only 23 goals, PSG conceding 28 and then the next lowest was 42.
Newcastle United followed up their interest with an offer for the young defender who will turn 22 on Wednesday (12 January) but Lille knocked it back.
Now on Friday morning, David Ornstein at The Athletic says that his information is that now Newcastle have gone back in and submitted a new and improved second offer for Sven Botman.
With now news awaited on Lille’s response to the higher offer.
Sven Botman played for Lille on Tuesday in their cup defeat against Lens, the match ended 2-2 and then it was 4-3 on penalties, Botman was one of the three successful penalty takers for the losing side.
Due to Lorient having a Covid outbreak, tomorrow’s Lille match has been postponed, meaning now a further nine days before Sven Botman is due to play again on Sunday 16 January. Maybe a nice gap in which to complete a move to Newcastle United…
The young central defender has many admirers and if Newcastle United were to land Botman, it would be a massive and surprising (to many outsiders) boost to hopes of both avoiding relegation and then building from there.
The Mail earlier reported that that Sven Botman is understood to be keen to join Newcastle United, despite initial worries that the team’s current relegation fight may put him off. However, that has not been the case and the young defender said to be up for the longer-term project that is being put in place at St James Park.
A fee of around £30m has been speculated to land the defender but it remains to be seen whether this latest unknown figure of Newcastle’s improved bid will be enough to tempt Lille to sell now.
Lille have got serious longstanding financial problems and are expecting to lost Sven Botman in the summer anyway, so it comes down to whether they can be tempted to sell now, or hold out for another five or so months.
This would be a very exciting signing for me, considering his age, profile, ability and achievements already.
Sven Botman would appear to tick a lot of boxes and would be a great marker in the sand, if Newcastle could land him as the second signing to follow Kieran Trippier into St James Park..
