Newcastle United bid for Diego Carlos turned down – Report

Diego Carlos has been one of a number of names linked with Newcastle United when it comes to potential central defenders coming in this month.

The 28 year old plays for Sevilla and arrived from Nantes in a £13m deal two and a half years ago.

Now on Thursday afternoon, The Athletic have reported that Newcastle United put in a formal offer but this has now been rejected by the La Liga club.

Easily one of the most reliable when it comes to reporting on Newcastle United, The Athletic in their report say that whilst this initial bid has been knocked back, talks are continuing between the two clubs.

With Kieran Trippier set to be announced imminently, Newcastle are being linked with a lot of players BUT it certainly appears that amongst the host of names put forward in the media, there is serious interest from NUFC in a good number of players.

Elsewhere, media reports have put Newcastle’s bid for Diego Carlos at around the £25m mark, which sounds certainly the kind of figure you would imagine as a minimum, with his profile.

His first two seasons at Sevilla have seen the club finish fourth both times, with the third best defensive record on each occasion.

This season, Diego Carlos has started 18 of the 19 La Liga games and Sevilla are second in the table, five points behind Real Madrid but with a game in hand. This success has been built on an outstanding defence with Diego Carlos at the heart of it, only 13 goals conceded in 19 games, Real Madrid having conceded four more.

Diego Carlos helped Sevilla win the Europa League in 2020 and helped Brazil win the Olympic title in the summer (2021) in Japan. He has been called up by the Brazil national side but yet to play for them.

The Athletic add that Eddie Howe and Newcastle want to ‘sign at least one centre-back, but ideally two…one who is comfortable in possession and another who is commanding.’

On the face of it, signing Diego Carlos from Sevilla looks a tough ask, considering they are competing for the La Liga title (eight points ahead of third) and also competing in the Europa League.

However, the ambition of Newcastle United is clearly there in this window and questions are being asked of other clubs, as NUFC go in for their players.

Diego Carlos faced Kieran Trippier only 19 days ago, Sevilla and the Brazilian defender winning 2-1 at home against Atletico Madrid and the England inernational.
