Kieran Trippier reported transfer fee a surprise as Newcastle United deal is close – Report

Kieran Trippier has completed the full 90 minutes of a 2-0 home victory over Raya Vallecano on Sunday, which puts Atletico Madrid fourth in La Liga.

However, after winning the game, Kieran Trippier seemingly waving farewell to the fans after two and a half years at the club.

There was some surprise / disappointment amongst Newcastle fans that the England defender featured, as supporters hope the club lands targets ASAP, so they can get involved in the relegation fight this month, key games against Watford and Leeds on the 15 and 22 January.

Despite Kieran Trippier playing in that match, there continues to be overwhelmingly widespread confidence in the media, that the move to Newcastle United is simply a matter of when, not if.

Diego Simeone said yet again (see below) on Sunday that he hoped the 31 year old would stay…but at the same time appeared to make clear that this was not going to happen.

Atletico Madrid are next due to play on Thursday away at Rayo Majadahonda in the cup. This (Tuesday) morning though the media in Spain fuelling hopes that a Newcastle deal could be close, when reporting that Kieran Trippier was missing from training.

That has now been followed up by an update from Craig Hope at The Mail, who is usually one of the most reliable when it comes to reporting on Newcastle United. He says that his information is that NUFC are expecting movement on the transfer this week and that he understands the transfer fee will be in the region of £12m, plus add-ons.

That £12m transfer fee figure has now also been reported by Sky Sports.

There had been talk of £25m or £30m but that always sounded very unlikely.

Kieran Trippier has less than six months on his contract, is 31 years old, Atletico Madrid paid Spurs only £20m back in 2019.

Whilst wages will obviously be big, to potentially land the England right-back for only £12m would be an absolute bargain in my eyes. Whilst when talking about add-ons, you have to guess that the biggest add-on to pay if this deal goes through, will be if Newcastle United dodge relegation. Which to me is a completely positive add-on, as nobody will complain if Newcastle have to hand over another sizeable amount of cash (£5m?) due to Kieran Trippier having helped NUFC avoid the drop.

Talking after the 2-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, Diego Simeone was once again asked about the future of Kieran Trippier, with the Atletico Madrid boss saying 2 January 2022:

“Kieran Trippier is an extraordinary footballer that has given us a lot.

“But as I have said, it [what happens next] depends on him.

“We hope that Trippier can stay…but I don’t know if you can hold anybody back in life.”
