Kieran Trippier Newcastle United medical today with three (or more…) to follow – Report

Kieran Tripper is now due imminently on Tyneside to complete his Newcastle United move.

The Athletic have been well up to speed throughout this transfer process and they say that the England defender will take his medical on Wednesday, after arriving from Madrid.

Sky Sports seemingly won the race on Tuesday night to bring news that the transfer fee had been formally agreed between Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United.

This followed a number of media reports throughout Tuesday in both Spain and England, claiming that there would be an initial fee of around £12m, plus further add-ons.

This was also the fee / deal that Sky Sports then reported last night, when reporting everything had been signed off between to two clubs, with just the medical to go through, as the main personal terms with Kieran Trippier already previously agreed and only final details to sort.

Various media have given wildly different figures on what they understand / guess to be the money that could be paid in add-ons. Anything from as low as £3m to as high as another £12m, at the extremes. What though most do agree on, is that the add-ons will significantly rely on whether or not Kieran Trippier helps keep Newcastle United up this season.

Kieran Trippier will improve Newcastle United at both ends of the pitch. As well as a clear upgrade on any other defensive option Newcastle have on the right, the England star can create in both open play and on set-pieces. Trippier got six assists in 28 league games last season as Atletico Madrid won the La Liga title, whilst in 2019/20, the former Spurs defender got four assists in 23 league starts for the Spanish club.

Set to complete this first excellent signing only five days into the January transfer window and ten days before the next Premier League match (Watford at home), is a significant first strike for the new Newcastle United owners. Signing a very good player who raises the quality of the team AND not having been taken for mugs when it comes to the transfer fee.

Just over seven months ago Kieran Trippier picked up a La Liga winners medal and six months ago played for England in the Euros final.

The Athletic say that their information is that Newcastle United want to add at least three other January signings to the Kieran Trippier one, hopefully as many as five.

They report that the NUFC owners and Eddie Howe, are looking now to follow up with two new central defenders, a midfielder, a striker and a left-back.
