Talks between Manchester United and Newcastle United have resumed on Monday afternoon, according to the Northern Echo.

They say their information is that with the Hugo Ekitike deal now in doubt, attention has switched back to Newcastle trying to get a last gasp Jesse Lingard deal done.

Monday morning had revealed the news that Reims had agreed to sell Hugo Ekitike, after an improved bid was made by NUFC.

The offer accepted, reported to be around the £25m mark but with significant potential future add-ons, reported to be possibly as high as £8m

The 19 year old striker has been one of the major success stories of the first half of the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season.

Only making his first Ligue 1 start for Reims in August, Hugo Ekitike hit the ground running. With still only 11 Ligue 1 starts now behind him, the teenage forward has already been directly involved in 10 goals.

The 19 year old scoring eight league goals and grabbing two assists, despite only the 11 Ligue 1 starts and seven sub appearances. The 6ft 2 tall Hugo Ekitike averaging a direct goal involvement every 95 minutes so far.

Growing up in Reims, Hugo Ekitike has been with the club since the age of 11 and came through the youth system.

However, Monday afternoon bringing further reports from France, detailing that the deal could be off because the 19 year old was having cold feet about the Newcastle United move.

Whether that is due to the fact he would be leaving home for a foreign country at the age of 19 after only 11 league starts, or the fact that Newcastle United are currently in relegation trouble, or a bit of both…

With doubts on that Hugo Ekitike move, the Northern Echo saying that Newcastle are trying to do a Jesse Lingard loan deal until the end of the season as an alternative. However, there are also claims that West Ham are trying to sign Lingard as well, something which would be a major surprise if it happened as it was assumed Man Utd wouldn’t let him go to another club in the top half of the table in this window.

The (deadline) day is still young…
