Hugo Ekitike : Newcastle United and Reims 6 days into talks for January transfer – Report
Monday night has seen Sky Sports report that their information is that Newcastle United are trying to sign Hugo Ekitike.
The 19 year old striker has been one of the major stories of the first half of the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season.
Only making his first start for Reims in August, Hugo Ekitike has hit the ground running. With only 10 Ligue 1 starts behind him, the teenage forward has already been directly involved in 10 goals.
The 19 year old scoring eight league goals and grabbing two assists, despite only the 10 Ligue 1 starts and seven sub appearances. The 6ft 2 tall Hugo Ekitike averaging a direct goal involvement every 86 minutes so far.
Respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano backing up the Sky Sports report, saying that Newcastle United are in for the player but Reims wanting 30m euros (approx £25m) for the striker, with other clubs also interested.
Growing up in Reims, Hugo Ekitike has been with the club since the age of 11 and came through the youth system. So obviously you are talking about £25m profit on a homegrown product, if Newcastle United did do a deal at the French club’s asking price.
Considering the 19 year old has made only 10 first team starts, if Newcastle United (or any other club) bought him, then it is all about buying the potential that has been shown in such a short space of time and few minutes on the pitch.
Meanwhile, GFFN have also reported on the potential deal, saying that their sources have told them that actually talks began last Tuesday (six days ago) between the two clubs, after Newcastle United made their approach for Hugo Ekitike.
Newcastle United are clearly casting their net far and wide and are in talks on a number of players, doing everything they can to land targets to fill the essential positions in the NUFC team that desperately need strengthening. With Eddie Howe having confirmed that Callum Wilson is expected to be out for at least eight weeks, bringing in extra goals is now an even bigger priority.
