Claudio Ranieri quizzed on Chris Wood, Newcastle United and biggest game of the season?
Claudio Ranieri took over at Watford on 4 October after the sacking of Xisco.
Xisco got Watford promoted last season and after seven games they had seven Premier League points, in lower mid-table four points above the relegation zone and Newcastle United, who were second bottom.
Watford are always a good bet in the sack race at any stage of a Premier League season and Claudio Ranieri must now surely be fearing the worst.
Having lost their last seven matches (all competitions) and conceding 20 goals in those seven games, Watford will now drop into the relegation zone if losing to Newcastle United on Saturday.
That would make it eight defeats in a row for Claudio Ranieri and an overall record at Watford of played 13, lost eleven and won two. Bizarrely, the two games Watford haven’t lost under Ranieri have been a 4-1 win against Man Utd and a 5-2 victory at Goodison when they trailed Everton 2-1 with only 12 minutes remaining.
Claudio Ranieri now faces a week where he plays all three of the other clubs in the bottom four. As make or break weeks go, this is probably as extreme as it gets for a relegation threatened manager.
Claudio Ranieri has now been quizzed about the challenge of Newcastle on Saturday, before he then moves on to Burnley away on Tuesday and Norwich at home next Friday.
Claudio Ranieri pre-match press conference, asked whether this game against Newcastle United is the biggest he has faced as Watford manager since he arrived?
“I can’t say it’s the biggest.
“All the matches are very, very important.
“Of course, this week, all these three matches are very, very important for us.
“Also though, I think the Premier League doesn’t finish in this week.
“And for us, it is important for us to maintain our confidence, of the football.”
This match though against Newcastle will be a huge match in Watford’s season?
“Yes, this is a big match for us, for them [Newcastle], but also in this week we play three times against teams [Newcastle away, Burnley away, Norwich home] who are in the relegation fight.
“It is very important to be solid, strong, because the opponent will also be strong and solid.
“However, I’m confident with my team.”
Are the games against Newcastle, Burnley and Norwich, all games that you must not lose?
“I believe the Premier League doesn’t finish in this week. It’s important to get a very good result, to be solid, to fight, that’s it.”
What do you think about Chris Wood, the new Newcastle United signing?
“All the world knows Chris Wood.
“He is strong, very good in the air, good when he holds the ball.
“And with [Allan] Saint-Maximin [and other], they have very very good players.
“We have to make our football, we have to press, we have to play, we have to get a positive result.”
Are the new signings available for this Newcastle match?
“Look, of course not everybody is 100 per cent, but I can choose between them.
“I have to see tomorrow [Friday] if they travel with us, then I’ll see.”
