Chris Wood – Three reasons why he’s ideal signing for where we are right now

With the signing of Chris Wood, I have seen fans and journalists alike, scoff and complain about the transfer of the Burnley striker.

I think deriding the New Zealander is hugely disrespectful and not a little over the top, given the current Newcastle United position.

Whilst the new owners have the wealth and seemingly the ambition, the reality is that we are simply not yet in a position where we can readily attract the Vlahovics and the Schicks of this world.

Maybe in a few seasons but not until we have established ourselves.

Here are three reasons why I believe Chris Wood makes perfect sense and is a solid, if not spectacular, signing for right now.

A consistent Premier League quality striker

Seriously, how many strikers outside of the elite clubs can say they’re hitting double figures every time for four seasons?

We are currently desperate for striking options and Chris Wood is a proven entity, with Premier League quality and finishing ability.

His purchase weakens a direct rival

This cannot be understated,

Buying a striker of this quality from a relegation rival is massive.

As we’ve seen, it’s very difficult to recruit in the winter window, and now Burnley have to do just that, without the benefit of rich owners.

This means they’ll likely have to either take a punt on a young prospect, or pay over the odds for a first team option, likely from abroad, and they’ll be doing that with a limited budget.

As well as going straight into the team now, will add depth going on

We don’t need just one new striker in this window, we probably need at least two.

Having someone who is an effective back up for when a new striker comes in, and / or when Wilson is back fit, is a great asset.

Even if the worst happens and we are relegated, Wood would be very useful in the championship, think Daryl Murphy under Rafa.

Obviously he’d be aged out after a couple of seasons, but as we can see with our current squad, depth is a very important luxury we haven’t been able to afford in the past.

So is £25m a bit much for him?

Sure, but it’ll pay off in the end, and for once, Newcastle United have got the money to spare.
